Cannabis workers push to unionize amid state legalization

UNITED FRONT

Cannabis workers push to unionize amid state legalization

As more legal cannabis dispensaries open their doors throughout the country, the likelihood that unionized workers might be behind the counter is becoming more of a reality, reports Forbes

McClary Easley, the People’s Ecosystem (TPE)’s director of strategic initiatives, told the publication that the industry is riddled with inherent racial barriers to entry, while LaQuita Honeysucker, the the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) International’s civil rights and community engagement director, says the industry needs to ensure jobs are family-sustaining jobs and that workers feel safe on the job.

UFCW International President Anthony “Marc” Perrone said: “Wherever there are cannabis workers interested in organizing, UFCW is ready to fight for them and build a safer, more inclusive industry together.”

CBD BILL

A new era for cannabis research in the US

Market Screener reports that, after years of championing legislation to legalize cannabis for medical purposes, the H.R. 8454 – Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol (CBD) Research Expansion Act marks a “historic breakthrough in addressing the federal government’s failed and misguided prohibition of cannabis.”

The bill allows for the manufacture, distribution, dispensing, or possession of cannabis or CBD for medical research purposes and directs the DEA to register manufacturers and distributors of CBD or cannabis for the purpose of commercial production of an approved drug that contains cannabis or its derivative.

U.S. Congressman Earl Blumenauer, Founder and Co-chair of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus and Sponsor of the Medical Marijuana and Cannabidiol (CBD) Research Act, stated:

“At a time when more than 155 million Americans reside where adult-use of cannabis is legal at the state or local level and there are four million registered medical marijuana users with many more likely to self-medicate, it is essential that we are able to fully study the impacts of cannabis use.”

ANOTHER SCAM

Another cannabis industry scam as Amsterdam Cannabis Expo ghosts exhibitors

The Amsterdam Cannabis Expo, due to be hosted between November 24 and 26, 2022, is reportedly not taking place at all, leaving a number of would-be exhibitors scrambling to recover their lost cash, writes BusinessCann.

Orange County CBD’s Melanie Hatjigiannakis told the publication that they first came across the event when they were drafting a list of industry events to exhibit at throughout 2022 and only later were the red flags apparent – ceasing contact before sending any money. However, other exhibitors weren’t so lucky.

The event venue, RAI Amsterdam, intervened, stopping many companies from losing money. The RAI told the publication: “We regret that someone is able to fabricate and advertise a false event in the media. It is especially painful for the companies that have made a payment, expecting to attend and/or exhibit at an event. The exhibitors we have spoken to have found their way to the authorities. As I understand it, they are taking legal steps to get their money back.”
