OLYMPIC STAR SUSPENDED

Singapore’s first Olympic gold medallist suspended for cannabis use.

In a familiar story, an Olympic athlete has been suspended from competition for admitting using cannabis, reports BBC News.

Joseph Schooling became Singapore’s first Olympic gold medallist in 2016 becoming a local sporting hero in the process. After confessing to using cannabis, Schooling has had the ability to take leave from his military service taken away, effectively removing the option to train or compete. Singapore is known for incredibly strict laws including a mandatory death sentence for drug trafficking.

Schooling passed his drug test but admitted he’d tried cannabis on a trip to Vietnam, “I gave in to a moment of weakness after going through a very tough period of my life,”

WORKERS RIGHTS

California could be the 7th state to protect workers who use cannabis in their free time.

California may be the latest state to put in protections for workers who consume cannabis in their free time, per Washington Times.

The bill was passed by state lawmakers earlier this week and Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom has until the end of September to decide whether to sign it into law. While the bill would protect workers from being punished for use outside of work, more accurate saliva tests could still be used to assess impairment in the workplace.

“Nothing in this bill would allow someone to come (to work) high,” said Assemblymember Bill Quirk
